With all the recent media attention to the Corona Virus, I thought this might be a good week to address health issues when traveling abroad. One thing I want to remind you is the travel industry is very dependent on customer travel. They take every precaution to make sure their guests are safe and will not risk their health in the name of “profit”.
For example, the cruise line industry has diverted over 40 ships to different locations to avoid high-risk areas. One of the best stories I have heard regarding these changes involves Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. They diverted their high-risk, Asia sailings to Australia and offered free cruises to Australian first responders and their families while these ships are off their primary schedules. The cruise industry is always one of the first to respond in times of need.
Even land travel companies take every precaution by following governmental travel restrictions and providing that information to their clients whenever necessary. Tours or cruises will be cancelled with refunds or changed to ensure the guests interests are foremost. This can be very disappointing for guests with a highly anticipated trip but is ultimately best for all involved.
With that said, it is always good to follow healthy sanitary practices like frequent washing of hands when traveling. I also would advise to be patient whenever possible and make your travel decisions based on the latest travel advisories. But the decision is ultimately yours. Everybody has their own level of risk aversion. Rest assured that the travel industry has your safety in mind, but don’t be pressured into traveling into a situation that you are not comfortable.
